Marco Polo Cycling Club

Of course the Marco Polo Cycling Club is going to participate in the Tour du Faso. This cycling race has become famous because of the hard conditions in Africa. High temperatures, bad roads and primitive circumstances make this stage race a real challenge. The race is a UCI-category 2.5 race. This year the Société du Tour de France organises the race in cooperation with the Fédération Burnikabè de Cyclisme and the ministry of youth and sports of Burkina Faso.

The Dutch photographer Chris Keulen won the World Press Photo with his report of the Tour du Faso 2000. On the site of World Press Photo you can see the photos.

The team of the Marco Polo cycling Club had big problems to get to Burkina. After rebooking their tickets 6 (!) times the team is now on their way to Ouagadougou. Problems with tickets involved extra security meassures at Air France, cancellations and strikes with Air Afrique and overbookings with Sabena. The Société du Tour has been very helpfull and Travel agent Ulysses (specialised in bike-travels) from Belgium did an incredible job, changing the tickets from fridaynight till saturday evening three times, getting the team on the (Sabena) plane in Brussels just in time sunday morning. The Marco Polo management is used to some stress, this being the 10th stage race (8th one outside of Europe) the team is flying to this year, but this time all organisational power had to be used.

The Marco Polo management doesn't hope this is the start of a Tour full of problems and is very confident to be one of the strongest teams in the Tour. Because Jamsran Ulzii-Orshikh from Mongolia and Damir Iratov from Uzbekistan (due to situation in Uzbekistan!) had to cancel, the team will not have the very exotic line-up followers are used to, with Dutch riders Dona, Dijkhuis, De Waard, Legtenberg and Tjallingii and 'the captain on the road', Nathan Dahlberg from New Zealand (president of the Marco Polo Cycling Club). The team will be lead by Edwin Achterberg, assisted by Petra Hofs

After arrival in Ouagadougou, the Marco Polo team was welcomed by the organisation of the race and people from the Dutch embassy. "The Société du Tour de France had taken care of transport and Hotel very well, so untill now this race looks like a luxury trip", according to team director Edwin Achterberg, who just returned from the Qinghai-Tibet race in China and was leading teams in for instance Pakistan and Uruguay before.

Achterberg: "When we went back to the airport today, there was a less pleasant surprise. People from Sabena told us, there will probably be no return flights to Belgium anymore, after the 4th of November". It looks like another nice job is waiting for the Marco Polo management back home and travel agency Ulysses from Wemmel, Belgium.

Thanks to the knowledge of the Dutch (NWB) team that went in the years before, the Marco Polo staff was able to establish some contacts in Burkina and had some knowledge of what was waiting for them, before arrival. Thanks also go out to Mr. Theo Buiting from the NWB. He helped to make it possible for the team to feel well-prepared and confident!

The Marco Polo CC team feels with the teams that still have problems to get to the Tour in time and wishes them good luck!

Oktober 31

The first stage of the Tour du Faso 2001 was won by Joost Legtenberg! Congratulations Joost! He won the sprint of a frontgroup of 7. Also Bram de Waard and Nathan Dahlberg from the Marco Polo Cycling Club were in this break-away. Bram got 5th and Nathan 7th.

According to the message we received, Joost now is leader in 4 classifications...

The report of the Tour du Faso mentioned the strong cooperation of the 3 Marco Polo riders in the frontgroup. They neutralised attacks from the others, then took over and dropped 3 riders from the 10 men break.

Joost Legtenberg: "The start of this stage was around 14:00. This is one of the warmest moments of the day. And because we were not so well adapted yet, the heat was really difficult. The race started really fast with a lot of riders wanting to make a break. After 40 km there was a good breakaway with 10 riders. We worked good together and with the work of Nathan and Bram, I could win the sprint. After the race we were suprised that the conditions of the road are pretty good. No one of us flatted today. Also Simon finished today. He was really ill and we didn’t expect him to finish. Hope he will recover soon!"

Also the second stage brought a victory for the Marco Polo Cycling Club! Maarten Tjalingii won with 40 seconds ahead of the Burkinese Laurent Zongo.

Joost Legtenberg was second in the fieldsprint and became 5th. He still wears the yellow jersey!

Joost Legtenberg: "Maarten already announced it before the stage. I will attack today he said. And he did. Almost from the beginning he was in the front.  At first with a Burkinese, but at the end on his own. Behind him the bunch was controlled by the Marco Polo team. At the finish I took a 5th place which is good for the point classement. In the GC nothing happened."

In todays stage a three men break-away without any rider from the Marco Polo Cycling Club caught some minutes. Two of the frontgroup couldn't keep up with the Belgium Patrice Hembroulle. Hembroulle finished solo 3 minutes ahead of the peloton. Our Tour leader Joost Legtenberg won the peloton sprint and got 2nd in the stage.

Hembroulle could not bring the leader jersey in danger, Joost keeps his yelow jersey. And Marco Polo still has three riders in the top ten of the G.C.

Joost Legtenberg: "Today we started really early at 7:00. The first 2 hours the temperature was good but after that it became really hot again. With the 3 riders in the front, and no danger for the GC, the Marco Polo team controlled the group. For over 120 km there was a side wind which made the race difficult. With 40 km to go we made a left turn and from there we had tailwind until the finish. The Marco Polo team chased down 2 of the 3 riders in the front, but we were too late to catch back the Belgium rider who won the stage."

Todays stage the wind played an imporant role. The peloton was split into echelons and Marco Polo Cycling Club made the first group with 4 riders! The tempo was fast today, 173,5 KM with an average of 45,5 KM/H.

Maarten Tjalingii got away with the Maroccan Er-Ragragui and they caught almost 3 minutes. This was a good move from Maarten because he became 2nd on G.C. with the time he gained. Only in the final sprint the Maroccan rider was stronger and won the stage.

Joost won the field sprint again and maintains Tour leader. Now Marco Polo has 4 riders in the top five of G.C.!

Joost Legtenberg: "Today was the longest stage of the race. Because there was road work we had to ride for over 30 km neutralized at a very slow speed. Because of this we were over 5 hours on our bike today. Everybody was almost dehydrated after the stage. Furthermore it was almost one straigth road. Almost no villages and a lot of dust. People told us that this is the warmest region of Burkina Faso."

Today is a resting day.

Marco Polo meet Burkina King

The Marco Polo Cycling Club spent the resting day in the Tour du Faso to meet people in the village that the home town of Bram de Waard (Limmen, Netherlands) has a charity project with.  When they arrived in the little village in the bush they were welcomed by the King, who gave them a (living!) chicken as present.
The team was really impressed by the poverty. "The people had nothing back there", according to team director Edwin Achterberg, "not even plastic bottles to keep their water in!"

Tour leader Joost Legtenberg: "It is very hard to give away presents, as people start to fight over it, because they all have nothing and we can never give enough. It makes it kind of hard to concentrate on the race here, but the poverty will not leave when we go back to the 'civilised world' and there is allmost nothing you can do, not even when you are in the middle of it. The temperature and the rough roads make it really hard and slow, most of the time. I am happy to be this long in the leader jersey, but I do not know if I can keep it till the end, as I am a little bit sick."

Communication with the team home base is pretty hard. Achterberg: "one time we found an internet cafe and were very happy it was open. The owner forgot the password, though, so we still couldn't make contact."

The food is good, service from the Societe du Tour, French cuisine with a French Chef!!

The team expects the Africans to get stronger day by day and will concentrate on keeping many riders in the top of the GC as long as possible, to minimise risks of getting sick, etc..

Rider Atze Dijkhuis went home because of family circumstances, he arrived well and is happy that the situation at home improved a lot since his arrival!

November 5

Joost Legtenberg: "Today was a short stage. But because I was ill it was not an easy stage for Marco Polo. We decided to control the group and bring me to the finish. This succeeded. Again a perfect demonstration of teamwork. In the breakaway of 7 riders there were no important riders for the GC."

Bram de Waard took care of the 3rd victory for Marco Polo in the Tour de Faso. He won the first half of the 6th stage.

Joost Legtenberg: "In this stage of 100 km it was Bram who was the smartest. With only 1km to go he jumped away and he made it till the finish line. The group was just a few meters behind him. This was the rigth moment for Bram to win a stage. After working for the team for several days, it was his moment to take his chance. Unfortunately it was Simon again with bad luck. With only 20 km to go he crashed. He injured his elbow. He was able to finish and after a short recovery he was ready for the next stage."

Joost Legtenberg: "In the beginning of the stage there was a breakaway of 7 riders who took in a short period over 5 minutes. At that moment we realized that there were 2 riders in the front who could be a danger for the GC. So we had to work really hard to chase them. At the end of the race we succeeded in that but we had no effort anymore to sprint for the prices today."

The first victory for a Burkinese Cyclist!

Joost Legtenberg: "A big moment for the Burkinese. They became 1st and 2nd today. After the victory of  OULAIBALY yesterday the Burkinese cyclists also wanted to win a stage. Congratulations!

With a little tailwind it was not so hard for the Marco Polo team to control the race. I am still leading in the GC and Point classification. We hope that we can keep the jersey's till Sunday."

Joost Legtenberg: "Very chaotic stage with dozens of attacks but only one who succeeded. The French rider jumped at 2 km from the finish and it was no problem for him to stay in front. I took a 4th place.

This night we had to sleep at an army base near the border with Ghana. Tomorrow will be the last stage. Hopefully we can finish the race succesfully."

Joost Legtenberg won the Tour du Faso 2001. In the last stage he and his team mates defended his leader jersey succesfully. This was the fourth victory in an international stage race for the Marco Polo Cyclng Club!

Too bad for Bram de Waard he got disqualified in the final sprint and got 10 minutes time penalty. Herewith he looses his top 5 position.

Joost Legtenberg: "Yes, I won the Tour du Faso, I also won the points classification. I thank my team mates; Maarten, Bram, Nathan and Simon and the staff; Petra Hofs and Edwin Achterberg for the enormous work they did during the race. Too bad Bram got 10 minutes penalty time for illegal sprinting at an intermediate sprint. At the finish there was really a mass of spectators. With a big ceremony in which the King of Burkina Faso participated, the race was officially closed."
